Different perspectives on the satirized message. A cognitive analysis of satirical cartoons by Paweł Kuczyński
Artistic dialogue via image has become a powerful tool in the contemporary media. The visual medium of expression is particularly significant in satirical cartoons which comment upon various aspects of reality, often in a humorous manner (El Refaie 2009). Since conceptual mechanisms such as metaphor and metonymy can also be identified in the visual media (Forceville 1996; Forceville and Urios-Aparisi 2009), their novel forms of expression can act as a vehicle in addressing vital social issues.
My talk will involve a brief presentation of selected satirical drawings by a famous Polish cartoonist Paweł Kuczyński, in which the contemporary trends in the manner of communication are expressed in a creative fashion. I will focus on the significance of image schemas (Johnson 1987), in particular CONTAINER, LINK and FORCE which lend the structural basis to different metaphorical contruals, e.g. MOBILE PHONES ARE ISLANDS and MOBILE PHONES ARE SHARKS.
I will briefly discuss how the same visual composition can lead to different metaphorical readings depending on the adopted perspective of the viewing audience.
