The Intentionality and Conventionality in the use of Irony

The Irony has been studied vastly as a rhetorical device since Plato's dialogues in the classical context of philosophy of language, and also as a speech act in the context of modern linguistics. This study, on the other hand, intends to examine not only the irony per se, but the 'use of irony'. Therefore, here the 'ironists' plays the role of the object of observation.
As soon as the ironist stands in the spotlight, two main factors become crucial. The history of humanities has paved the way for us to claim that human subjectivity is limited and defined by two interrelated sociological and psychological scopes: conventionality and intentionality. When an utterance is produced, it is based upon the conventional rules (of the language, the semiotic of interactions, etc.) and at the same time, depending on the nature of utterance, it shows the intention of the speaker.
Both of these scopes are unprecedentedly important in the 'use of irony' since when an irony is produced, it is perceived as an innovative act of speech-making. However, simultaneously it would not be significant unless it was produced within the borders of conventions.
Hence, this study aims to investigate and evaluate the balance of intentionality and conventionality when an agent produces an irony within the structure of the possibilities of the language.
