Question tags in ELF communication. From the universal form to the emergence of new variations

Due to the dominant role of English as a lingua franca, a great number of studies have been devoted to the establishment of both the phonological, lexicogrammatical and pragmatic features of ELF and the cognitive mechanisms that motivate the usage of such forms. It is believed that the English knowledge level of ELF users is not the same as that of native English speakers since it stems from different cognitive processes. Consequently, the difference in cognitive mechanisms leads to connections between English and native languages of ELF speakers and thus to the creation of forms that deviate from the standards of English. The author focuses on the idea proposed by Seidlhofer who suggests that one of the lexicogrammatical features, which occur regularly in ELF communication, is the invariant question tag. Nonetheless, with the support of the VOICE corpus, the aim of the presentation is to demonstrate that ELF speakers use not only the invariant form but also various schematic question tags that may be seen as the emerging features of ELF.
