Compounding revisisted
Very often the authors of theories of compounding try to make the categories of compounds universal so as to cater for as many languages as possible. Furthermore, the categories of compounds seem to be based on reasonably old concepts which do not necessarily work for less common languages as for instance those from the Celtic branch. But should such categories really suit all possible languages or maybe they should be language specific? Taking this into consideration, the following paper is to provide a brief overview of the major theories of compounding as well as to check and comment upon the actual applicability of those for Welsh as a representative of Celtic languages. Also, it is to suggest some areas for further development of categories of compounds themselves providing a new approach towards their description and analysis which may lead to a new or revised understanding of compounding as a process.
