Multimodal constructions of sexuality in EFL textbooks in Poland
This paper is part of a larger British Council-funded project entitled "Investigating gender and sexuality in the ESL classroom: Raising publishers', teachers' and students' awareness", and looks into the context of Polish EFL education to qualitatively scrutinize the discursive and multimodal construction of sexuality in two different ESL textbooks, along with the accompanying workbooks and teacher's books. This material has been analyzed with the methods of Multimodal Discourse Analysis (Kress and van Leeuwen 2006) and Feminist Critical Discourse Analysis (Lazar 2005; 2014). In line with Sunderland's (forthcoming) recommendations, the analysis of sexuality in this paper focuses not on the absent representations or constructions of non-heterosexualities, but it rather seeks to uncover and challenge the implicit and/or explicit degrees of heteronormativity (Motschenbacher 2010, 2011) in the EFL materials. Thus, the focus has been on different textual and visual practices to expose the workings of heteronormativity (Motschenbacher 2010, 2011). A distinction in the semiotic potential of various textbook sub-genres has also been made to provide a more nuanced demonstration of how sexuality emerges as a salient social category in EFL learning (and teaching).
