Infelicity of dexterity? Repairing talk in conversations

While engaged in a spontaneous conversation, speakers are likely to find themselves in trouble at some point. Hitches, errors and misunderstandings are naturally occurring phenomena specific to conversations. When these occur, they stop the progress of the talk: conversation is put on hold until the trouble is attended to and solved. The practices of managing troubles in talk are studied in the field of conversation analysis, where it is referred to as "repair" (Clift: 2016). Repairs are devices which help speakers to avoid pauses in conversations, maintain intelligibility and, arguably, provide means to perform certain social actions.
Drawing on a plethora of research into English conversations, I set out to explore some intricacies of repair in Polish conversations. To do so, I dived into SPOKES (Pędzik: 2015), a corpus of Polish conversations. Equipped with the extracts from the corpus, I discuss various aspects of repair: who gets to repair, when, where, why and how the repair is done. I also evaluate usefulness of the corpus in finding such phenomena.
