Polish Perception of Emotion in Spoken Indian Languages
The purpose of this study was to examine non-native speakers' ability to successfully recognise emotions in foreign languages that they did not speak. For this, I specially chose Polish participants to investigate if they were able to correctly identify emotions in four Indian languages. One female native speaker of each of the following languages, Hindi, Marathi, Tulu and Tamil was recorded. Each speaker uttered a sentence, neutral in connotation, in their own language while expressing four different emotions: happiness, surprise, sadness and anger. These utterances were then interpreted by Polish participants who had to identify the intended emotion. The results show that sadness, with the lowest frequency and minimum pitch of 40 Hz, was the only emotion that was correctly identified as the intended emotion by over 90 percent of the participants. All the other emotions were identified correctly to a lesser extent. Furthermore, participants mistook sadness and happiness for anger. Evidence indicates that emotion recognition is not universal in a foreign language that is unknown to the speaker.
