Decision-making process of trainee interpreters: a pilot project
Unlike translators, conference interpreters produce target texts under huge time pressure, without any possibility of deliberating over their performance. Furthermore, simultaneous interpreting entails a wide range of "concomitant processing capacities" (Gerver 1975, Gile 1995): receiving the input (source text), listening actively, understanding and processing it, and finally producing an output (target text) with a short delay, and keeping on processing further output. Owing to monitoring mechanisms, interpreters are able to edit their speech and address any possible problems, e.g. by introducing repairs (Petite 2005, Kalina 1998).
Due to the simultaneity and complexity of these cognitive processes, tapping into the interpreter's decision-making process poses a considerable challenge, and has so far received only limited attention in interpreting research. The presentation will demonstrate the results of the author's pilot project on trainee interpreters' decision-making process conducted on a group of the second-year MA students of English Studies at the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin.
