Lexical Variation in a Specialized Motor Industry Discourse: A Preliminary Study
The classroom use of authentic texts used in everyday communication has always been an inseparable part of a foreign language teaching and learning. However, according to Grigaliuniene (2013), "the structures many current textbooks teach for certain functions are either never used or used infrequently while quite unexpected structures are the ones that actually occur" (p. 17). Hence, despite the awareness of the importance of authentic patterns of language use, the learners often learn the structures which are rarely used in actual communication. Teaching authentic phrases is even more important in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) where learners' specific needs impact the design of a course (Dudley-Evans and St John, 1998). What is more, these students need, particularly, the vocabulary of a target profession. To address some of the aforementioned problems, researchers may use corpus linguistic (CL) methodology, which "provides a means for the empirical analysis of language" (McCarthy and O'Keeffe, 2010, p. 7). The use of language corpora in foreign language teaching provides the teachers with relevant and authentic vocabulary, which is essential for the learners. The author's interests are closely related to ESP and CL. Thus, in her doctoral research conducted using corpus linguistics methodology, she will compile a corpus of authentic texts from the motor industry sector in order to identify and explore discourse functions of frequent and typical patterns of language use (e.g. keywords, lexical bundles), which should be included when designing teaching materials for high-school ESP students (automotive technicians and car mechanics).
