Paralinguistic and prosodic features of a trustworthy voice
Relation between personality and the voice has been examined since around late 1920s. Even so, the current knowledge about the paralinguistic features of the human voice is quite modest compared to other aspects of psycholinguistics (e.g. language acquisition). The aim of the thesis is to indicate the vocal features that induce trust in a listener. First, a literature review was carried out. Based on it, an experiment was conducted in the form of an online survey. Respondents were asked to assess a set of speech recordings. The recordings were in fact one female voice digitally altered to express certain vocal features. Findings indicate that tempo-altered voices cause dislike in both men and women. A preference to high-pitched female voice observed in men, whereas women tended to rate this voice lower. Also, women tend to rate female voice higher. The findings generally support the claim that pitch and tempo affect perception of trustworthiness in a voice. This area, however, needs further research.
