To Talk or to Sign? - How Foreign Language Teachers Communicate With Deaf Learners
One of the most important aspects of education of the d/Deaf and Deaf Culture is language. Deaf people who, due to their hearing loss, are unable to communicate using phonic language, have developed means of communication in the visual-spatial form, called sign language (Malmkjær, 2010). Sign languages, that shall be regarded as natural means of communication of the d/Deaf, are not treated appropriately among the hearing part of the society (Tomaszewski & Rosik, 2002).
The main aim of the presentation is to demonstrate the results of research conducted among foreign language teachers working with d/Deaf learners. It was focused on examining the foreign language acquisition of the d/Deaf in the Polish educational system. The paper illuminates upon the language used by the teachers during classes and in interactions with the d/Deaf. The results of the research provide interesting information about the modes and forms of communication, difficulties encountered by the teachers, and as well as about the methods used to effectively communicate with d/Deaf learners. The presentation also provides information on the teachers' approach to sign language.
