Tahitian, French Tahitian, and French as Language Rivals in French Polynesia



In their article from 2002, Paia and Vernaudon diagnosed that the number of speakers of Tahitian continues to diminish, in spite of the language's growing prestige. The census data from years 2007-2017, collected and made available by the Institute of Statistics of the French Polynesia, show yet another unexpected trend: the number of people declaring an ability to understand, read speak, and write one of the Polynesian languages does appear to be growing but the number of people who claim the main vehicular language of their household to be French seems to be growing alongside with it. This might seem rather counterintuitive, especially taken into the account the importance of the intergenerational transmission in language preservation. This presentation aims to explore the complex sociolinguistic dynamic and rivalry between standard French, Tahitian French, and Tahitian in French Polynesia as well as to preliminarily address some possibly relevant sociolinguistic phenomena such as language loyalty, language shift, language vitality, glottophagy, and postvernacularity.
