Interpersonal communication and deaf people. A brief introduction to Indian Sign Language
This paper discusses the notion of interpersonal communication. Following the basic model of communication by Shannon and Weaver I shall evaluate how well it corresponds to communication of deaf, and introduce my suggestion for slight changes in the mentioned model, so that it shall cover the communication acts between parties with hearing defects. Furthermore, I shall focus on the notion of sign language, in order to provide information concerning the language used widely in South-East Asia by deaf communities, which is Indian Sign Language. Moreover, the aim of this project is to introduce the situation of deaf people in India, a country in which history of social divisions is deeply rooted, and where the environment may be described as multi-lingual. Thus, how do these circumstances affect the lives of the deaf? What struggles do they meet, and how do they communicate with each other? The paper is highly based on 38th volume of People's Linguistic Survey of India. Indian Sign Language(s) published by Orient Blackswan in 2014; as well as Internet sources which provide empowerment and support for deaf people in India.
