How does globalisation affect the linguistic landscape of a medium-sized town centre?

Although the term globalisation seems to be a buzzword nowadays, it can be stated that this notion is commonly associated with changes that take place in big cities. However, this fact does not mean that only metropolitan areas are influenced by the process of creating a unified culture. Therefore, the aim of the presentation is to answer the question how globalisation affects the linguistic landscape of a medium-sized town centre. In order to provide the theoretical framework for the present paper, it will be explained what the term linguistic landscape stands for and which globalisation types are relevant to the discussed field of study. Moreover, the author will report on the investigation which was designed to find out to what degree traces of globalisation are visible in one of the oldest towns in Poland – Gniezno. The results of the mixed quantitative and qualitative study will confirm that the linguistic landscape of the Stare Miasto district in Gniezno is affected by different subtypes of globalisation. Furthermore, a thorough analysis of the chosen entities will show how problematic and complex the identification process of the globalisation references is. Finally, it will be pointed out which possibilities of further research can emerge in terms of globalisation and linguistic landscape studies.
