(Socio)cognitive methodologies for studying (textbook) discourse
The paper aims at scrutinising the existing (socio)cognitive methodologies for studying discourse and offering one that could be applied to analysing textbook discourse related to intercultural competence at the level of early school education in Poland. Initially, various definitions of cognition formulated by linguists are outlined and the criteria for describing this term are presented. Subsequently, in accordance with the selected criteria, the analysis of (socio)cognitive models for studying discourse in the field of linguistics is performed, including these developed by Cap (2014), Hart (2015), or van Dijk (2008, 2016). Particular emphasis is to be put on their potential social and cognitive aspects as well as typical features. The study reveals that none of the models can be regarded as entirely sociocognitive, namely the aforementioned scholars tend to direct towards one edge of the continuum, which will be elaborated on in the presentation. Finally, the author makes an attempt to describe a sociocognitive model that could be applied to studying textbook discourse related to intercultural competence at the aforementioned level of education.
